About the Exhibition

This Fall the Arts Center is proud to welcome our newest exhibition to the Bassett Gallery! Quilted Impressions 2 by Janet Swigler!

Works in Quilted Impressions 2 span a 7 year period of creation. Some of the quilts are one-of-a-kind and others are part of a series. All of them express what Swigler loves: color and line. Quilt making, her art form, incorporates principles of art – quality of line, value, proportion, and figure/ground composition. Come experience this incredible exhibition that honors the tradition of quilt making and shows the versatility of a medium that uses only fabric and thread.

About Janet Swigler

“Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.”  These words by poet Mary Oliver encapsulate my philosophy for living my life and creating my art.  Our world is brimming with wonders if time is taken to notice them and express that appreciation.

Frequently moving around the United States as a child in an Air Force family developed flexibility, independence, and resourcefulness.  Four pre-teen years in Japan offered cultural aesthetics and philosophies that continue to influence my art and life. I have lived most of my adult life in South Carolina where I taught music and raised my family. My musical training and career in music education have added an additional depth of artistic understanding.  Travel, reflection on daily life and personal insights, attentiveness to nature, and a regular tai chi practice inspire my abstract creations; they allow me to express my unique perspective.  Sewing has been a lifelong interest. Since retiring in 2013 I have been able to hone my artistic and quilt making skills in studies with Nancy Crow, an innovator in quilt making and a Master of her Medium in the Smithsonian Museum’s Renwick Alliance.
